I have to admit, I was ready to disapprove this movie. Having been a long-term fan of the Harry Potter books, a less-than-faithful adaptation could have bad it all for me. As it turns out, my fears were fraudulent.
Okay, some viewers will nitpick over discrepencies in characters’ appearances, but all the Indispensable stuff is here. The relationships between the characters are spot-on. The film also successfully convinces us that the magical goings-on are section of the protagonists’ everyday lives, whilst at the same time instilling a sense of wonder in the audience. This difficult balance is one of the main reasons the books are so successful.
Some of the child actors are a diminutive wooden at times, but generally the all-British cast is well-behaved. The rich characters of Rowling’s books have translated perfectly. Robbie Coltrane IS Hagrid. Emma Watson (Hermione) and Rupert Grint (Ron) have mammoth fun delivering most of the film’s best lines. Dan Radcliffe does well in the difficult task of communicating Harry’s thoughts, when the audience is unable to spy them written down. Deserved mention, too, for Maggie Smith’s McGonagall, Alan Rickman’s Snape and Tom Felton’s nasty-yet-vulnerable Draco Malfoy.

The quality of the production is splendid. The sets and costumes are fantastic, and the attention to detail is breathtaking. The effects are marvelous, sure highlights being Harry’s invisibility conceal, and the Quidditch match (an adrenaline-pumping spectacle lawful up there with anything Star Wars has to offer) .
In between the showpieces, director Chris Columbus remembers to let his audience prefer a breather with quieter moments. Harry staring out of his bedroom window, and he and Ron opening their presents on Christmas morning, are endearingly down-to-earth. And the scenes of Harry in front of the Mirror of Erised brought a perambulate to my gaze (If you’ve read the book, you’ll know why) .
That’s not to say the movie is without its faults. In an attempt to please purists, ALL the subplots have been included (though pared down a tall deal), when omitting a few entirely may have helped the pacing of the film. The opening half-hour may be difficult to prefer for those who are curious with the book. A few of the magical artefacts seem rather more mechanical than mystical.

But these are all puny niggles, really. The bottom line is that 152 minutes soar by as if it were half an hour. The only wish you have is that it were longer, and there can be no better note of a fine film than that.
Like the director, Chris Columbus, I gain that since the book was so well done, the movie shouldn’t change anything principal. I needn’t go on about the actors, scenery, music, etc. It’s all very well done and extremely piquant.
The movie itself gets 5 stars from me.

My review subtracts a star for the second disk which I found extremely frustrating. There is some very nice material included but it’s so difficult to gain while wading through the inconsequential filler material that it almost isn’t worth it.
BTW - if you have a search function on your DVD player (on my remote, it is accessed through the ‘Display’ button) the deleted scene access camouflage is #77

There are many stories about 9/11, but few as considerable and heartbreaking as those of Susan Retik and Patti Quigley. The suburban mothers from Massachusetts were pregnant the morning their husbands were murdered by terrorists.
Filmmaker Beth Murphy gives us an up-close and unflinching survey at Retik and Quigley in the documentary “Beyond Opinion” (now showing at the Boston Museum of Radiant Arts, but you can check the “Beyond Idea” web situation for national screenings arrive you) .
Before 9/11, Retik and Quigley were affluent mothers living in sprawling Colonials in the suburbs of Boston. The film begins with an emotional retelling of how these two women managed to grieve and secure the inner will to give birth and continue to be pillars of strength for their children. They found each other during this emotional chaos and found compassion and companionship.
The much thing about Retik and Quigley is how they customary their anxiety to obtain a charitable foundation, Beyond the 11th, that supports war widows in Afghanistan. The film has a fearless vision and a much message about healing. It’s difficult not to obtain emotionally fervent with Retik and Quigley as they struggle in the aftermath of the tragedy that destroyed the tranquility of their lives. In fact, sometimes there’s a discomfort at how great the two women are willing to section.
But if you manage to regain through “Beyond Understanding” without shedding a few tears, you may want to check and look if you’re made of stone.
However, the documentary stumbles when the two women finally come in Afghanistan to meet the dozens of women their fundraising efforts are assisting to become self-sufficient. Beyond the 11th gives money to assume the Afghanistan widows incubators to raise chickens and sell eggs.
The juxtaposition between the two rich Americans and the scores of oppressed and poverty-addled widows in Afghanistan is striking. It’s telling when Retik expresses her guilt in the procedure she and her family live compared to the war widows. Both the 9/11 widows appear overwhelmed by what they experience in Afghanistan and as result the film loses its diagram.
The Afghanistan widows appear in short interviews, but their stories are given short-shift and viewers launch to secure the same guilty feelings as Retik and Quigley. The experience of Retik and Quigley - while heartbreaking from an American perspective - pales in comparison to these broken, forgotten women in Afghanistan. These women have starved nearly to death, lost children to hunger, and husbands and sons to warfare.
It’s also positive that the generosity of Beyond the 11th is not nearly enough - in fact, it’s a plunge in the bucket. There are fundamental problems in the country too tremendous for a handful of incubators and chickens to solve.
But even with its flaws, “Beyond Opinion” is beautifully filmed and at times inspirational. Retik and Quigley are trying to wait on, trying to expend their effort for worthy rather than revenge. How can you not adore that even if you commence to realize that even with their losses Retik and Quigley are typical Americans - unaware of their advantages and qualified fortune until they advance face to face with the harsh realities of their sisters in Afghanistan?

I thoroughly like the 7th Heaven series. It has a lot of memory making episodes. Sometimes they effect you scream, laugh, feel obliging and some of them really cause you reflect and review some of your ideals. It is a obliging Family program and one I’d higly reccomend.
This is a big family reveal that deals with all kinds of problems we all encounter in our everyday lives. If you beget and have faith that god has a concept for us all. I dislike that they cancelled the point to so I’m buying the box sets.

The first two volumes of “Chobits” were spent introducing characters, the concept of Chobits as a legendary free-will Persocon series, and giving time for Chi to learn basic interaction and living skills. “Darkness Descends” is the first volume to initiate fleshing out characters and creating more tension around the rumor that Chi may be a Chobits.
To recap, “Chobits” follows 18-year-old farm boy Hideki Motosuwa, who happens to acquire a uniquely grand Persocon (human-like robots that have achieved cellphone-like state and popularity) in the trash; she can only say “Chi” at first (thus her name) but begins to learn recent words and ideas at a ample rate. Hideki and his various friends employ their time working, studying and trying to gain out who and where Chi is from.
Hideki’s co-worker Yumi, a high-schooler with size E cups, is the first character to accept depth in this volume. She invites him to a movie, and while the two have fun, Yumi’s attitude and comments seem to suggest she has something against Persocons. This will be a accepted attitude throughout the series, expressed by many other characters. Additionally, Chi decides to remove Hideki a porn mag he doesn’t have yet, and stumbles across the sequel to a fairy record book he had bought for her earlier. Chi’s character also gains more depth, as she begins to associate with the main character of the book, a vaguely veiled Persocon wandering lonely in a city chubby of delighted, un-alone humans. We inaugurate to wonder whether she is splendid of emotional afflict.

Hideki also runs into boy genius Minoru, who has been intensely researching Chi’s past, even posting her information on a BBS (Internet message board) . A mysterious e-mail returns with an lively photo attached: a Persocon seemingly identical to Chi, curved up to several wires, her arm covering the first letter of a word that reads “__H O B I T.”
This volume also contains two lighter-color stories: one inviting innocent Hideki’s stressing out over having to yell Chi how to occupy a bath; another, a well-directed semi-thriller that has Hideki believing that the knife-wielding female ghost of an urban sage actually lives below him on the first floor. Finally, Yumi’s dad lends Hideki a DVD player (which also plays video games) with the hopes that he watches some erotic videos on it. Instead, he runs into Minoru who invites him to play an online adventure game. Hideki, Chi, neighbor Shinbo and his Persocon Sumomo all jump into the game–but Chi is nowhere to be found. Not to spoil anything, but Chi’s entrance into the game continues to raise more questions about fair what she is advantageous of.
The Yumi and apprehension stories are standouts in this series. In Yumi’s case, music, close-ups and clever cutbacks to Chi all alone in the apartment do well to raise the tension about exactly how Yumi feels about Persocons, with the music perfectly emphasizing the feeling of sadness. The terror epic is done so cleverly that it could very well stand on its own: the mood is spine-tingling, and heart-pounding, although the viewer knows that microscopic may near of Hideki’s superstitions. It’s aloof quite nerve-racking if you suspend disbelief and allow yourself to be absorbed into the anecdote.

One of the more solid overall anime series, “Chobits” has an titillating anecdote, very recent art, and a soundtrack that at times can rival any music in any series. Again, feminists and those with young children may not want to hold on this series, unless you’re prepared to focus more strongly on the issues of identity and relationships. Not a robots, powerups and swordfights series, but a thoroughly enthralling one.
Chobits: Vol. 3, Darkness Descends contains episodes 9-12 in the ongoing stroy of Hideki and his super-kawaii Persocom named Chi. This volume is packed with lots of enjoyment for viewers. There are several laugh-out-loud moments. I especially treasure the big-brother relationship Yumi’s father has with Hideki. Their exchanges in the last episode are comedic timing genius, and reminiscent of vaudeville!

Episode 9 - Chi Buys - Chi takes her first paycheck from the bakery and goes off to rob something for herself at Hideki’s urging. But she wants to select him a gift, too. Episode 10 - A disturbing photo of someone or something who looks unprejudiced like Chi curved up to connections along her spine is e-mailed anonymously to the young boy genius Minoru. Chi looks at the photo and says it is not her, to Hideki’s profound relief. Hideki is asked to a movie by Yumi. As they are out, Chi reads her unusual book. She is drawn deep into the uncommon book, and encounters the mysterious Murky Chi. We also view more of Yumi, and it is touchingly proper that even someone so dazzling herself can be made stupefied by the eternally heavenly and perfect Persocoms. Also in this episode, we learn the correct epic leisurely Minoru’s special Persocom.
Episode 11 - Chi Confirms - In the fabulous Japanese tradition of telling ghost stories in the summer, Hideki and his friends investigate the mysterious “Apartment 104″ of a scary yarn that is haunting Hideki, leaving him paranoid and unable to sleep. Scary AND super-funny!
Episode 12 - Chi Plays - Yumi’s dad lends Hideki a DVD player so he can indulge in some porn DVD’s. Instead of porn, he ends up playing an online role-playing game. Chi is supposed to play, but where does she go once the game starts? There is a exact WOW moment in this episode, as Hideki gets a see of Chi’s accurate power.

One of the best of Hitchcock (although as far as his films go, Hitch probably has the best track report of any director living or insensible) . This film is basically the novel “Fugitive” and follows ravishing closely the status to his “The 39 Steps” from 1935 - a man is unsuitable for a CIA agent and is caught in a “deadly game of cat and mouse,” as it were. I Appreciate the music and the visuals that originate out the film - it makes me wish I had been alive to perceive it in a movie theater in the 50’s. And although this film is over 2 hours long, there’s no draw you can be bored - the suspense is so intense you’ll be chewing your nails the whole time (I did the first time I saw it) . Cary Grant is profitable as always, James Mason plays one of the most contaminated of Hitchcock’s villains (I would Admire to have this guy’s articulate) and Eva Marie Saint looks comely and plays her share well. I also enjoyed seeing Martin Landau in an early role as one of James Mason’s henchmen and Jessie Royce Landis (the mother from “To Rep a Thief”) as Grant’s mother (although both were very advance the same age at the time) . And I fancy any film earn by Bernard Herrmann - this guy should have had a mantle covered with awards, but as luck would have it, most of his scores went not only un-awarded but un-nominated (as this one did) . By all means, if you don’t enjoy it, hold it up today - and by the scheme, suited job for FINALLY releasing it on DVD, MGM.
With this film, Alfred Hitchcock region out to top himself and bag help on top after the failure of VERTIGO; he did honest that. NORTH BY NORTHWEST is automatically a classic with the acting by Cary Grant (his fourth and final film with Hitchcock), Eva Maria Saint, James Mason, Leo G. Carroll (another one of Hithcock’s favorites), and young Martin Landau (in his film debut), the unbelievable area pieces (the UN assassinate, the cropduster sequence, and the climax atop Mt. Rushmore), Bernard Hermann’s music find, and the classic work of the camera by the Master of Suspense. But this DVD’s extras really add to the film. It includes a documentary hosted by Saint (”Destination Hitchcock,” not “The Man in Lincoln’s Nose” as listed on this location), an audio commentary by screenwriter Ernest Lehman, two theatrical trailers (a standard trailer and one featuring Hitchcock), a TV Status, an isolated music audio track and the film itself remastered in Dolby 5.1 Audio and 1.66:1 widescreen anamorphic format. The only predicament is it comes in a snap case like all Warners DVDs, not allowing a booklet with production notes. But this DVD is a must occupy, especially if you’re a fan of Hitch. It’s also a notice of interest for 007 fans (like myself) . This film brought about seek thrillers and you should compare the cropduster sequence in this film to the helicopter sequence in FROM RUSSIA WITH Like.

I thoroughly enjoyed Season Three of “The Tudors.” In my plan, Jonathan Rhys Meyers gives his best performances ever as King Henry VIII. (Warning: the next few paragraphs absorb details that some people may think spoilerish, but seeing as how this is a retelling of British history, I’m clear most people know what’s going to happen this season.)

At the inaugurate of Season Three, Henry is married to Jane Seymour, a gentle woman who thrills her husband by giving him a son. Unfortunately, Jane’s reign as Queen of England is short-lived, and Henry soon finds himself mourning the only one of his wives thus far who he has truly loved (or at least been able to devour at the very demolish) . The impertinent Thomas Cromwell then convinces Henry that a original marriage to Anne of Cleaves would relieve the country. Henry reluctantly goes through with the marriage, but never consummates the union because, according to him, his recent bride “looks like a horse.” It doesn’t occupy long for Henry to tire of this marriage as well, and he passes the time in the company of the ditzy young Katherine Howard.
As all these romantic entanglements are taking plot, England is threatened by rebels, Princess Mary becomes even more disenchanted with her heart-broken circumstances at court, and Thomas Cromwell becomes less and less celebrated, as members of the court desperately try to net a draw to bring him down.

Overall, this was a fast-paced and curious season. I aloof miss the Anne Boleyn years, but “The Tudors” has managed to finish unique and gripping. I don’t recognize how this demonstrate can go on for more than another season, unless it continues after Henry’s death, which would be a very enthralling twist. Let’s hope Showtime decides to go that route, because “The Tudors” could continue to reign for a very long time.

After the superlative season 2 of ‘The Tudors’ (which featured outstanding, Emmy-worthy performances by Natalie Dormer as Anne Boleyn and Jeremy Northam as Sir Thomas More), I was completely prepared for a “letdown” of sorts for series 3. After all, the moral legend (Henry VIII’s marriage to Jane Seymour, birth of Prince Edward, death of Queen Jane and marriage to Anne of Cleves 2 years after that) goes at a relatively rapid 4 years in English history. I was UNprepared for the economic downturn and PeaceArch’s (the production company of ‘The Tudors’) decision to only have 8 episodes for 2009. If you view seasons 1-2 were a whirlwind, prepare to be whip lashed by season 3.
Queen Jane’s (Annabelle Wallis-in a replacement role from season 2’s Anita Briem) relationship with Henry is so chaste and “pure,” and he swears she is his most “beloved” queen (which he also claimed toward Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn) . Unfortunately, Queen Jane dies of peripureal fever after giving birth to Prince Edward. Wallis’s acting is measured-so measured in fact, you almost forget she is in the scene. She blends too well-unlike the performance given by Anne Stallybrass in the PBS production of ‘The Six Wives of Henry VIII,’ who captured the well-behaved spirit of meekness and servitude indispensable to BECOME Henry’s 3rd wife.
Joss Stone as Anne of Cleves is a treat-although she is not featured enough in the series. Her scenes are few and far between, but she makes a fabulous impact (explore her scene with Lord Privy Seal Cromwell) . There is a passion and fervor in her acting that is nothing but natural ability and talent. I glimpse forward to seeing her more and hopefully she will be abet in a guest starring role in season 4.
The gentlemen actors do acquit themselves beautifully. James Frain has been a purposeful, manipulative, charming and disturbed Thomas Cromwell. His plunge from grace is swift, merciless and ultimately degrading (spoiler-his execution is the MOST brutal and vindictive of any on ‘The Tudors’) . Henry Cavill is glossing into a solid actor-although the aging process for his Duke of Suffolk is not believable (he looks as though he is in his leisurely 20’s still-although the actor is only in his mid-20’s) . I have a complaint about Sir Francis Bryan though. Alan Von Sprang’s portrayal is too lascivious, too voluptuous and thusly, mildly irritating. One can only hope he will not feature prominently for season 4.
Ultimately this season belongs and is owned by the king himself. I am continually amazed at the transformation Jonathan Rhys Meyers takes on as Henry VIII. Episode 5 (directly after Queen Jane’s death) shows Henry and his Fool, Will Somers, locked in his chambers, drinking and reminiscing. The heartache, devastation and to some degree, hopelessness felt by Henry is palpable. This actor takes risks, doesn’t hesitate to muck it up and form emotional vulnerability “monstrous.” Season 4 will slay with his death, but Rhys Meyers has attach his brand on Henry VIII.
I have purposely not mentioned Katherine Howard (Tamzyn Merchant) because her memoir will be told in depth in season 4 (plus the portrayal was snide in the 3/4 of an episode she was in) . This season was unsatisfying because it was too rushed, too condensed, too compacted. We can only pray for a return to the strength shown in season 2 for series 4. Overall, a 3-star anguish ***.

In 1958, photographer Art Kane (on his first photographic assignment) assembled a group of legendary Jazz musicians on the steps of a brownstone on 124th Street and Madison Avenue in Harlem for a group photograph. The photo was to appear in a special edition of Esquire magazine. The result is one of the most well-known photographs taken in the 20th century. This film tells the myth of the photo, the photographer and many of the musicians who took allotment in the project.

Getting that many jazz musicians together at eleven o’clock in the morning was trickier than you might assume - most of the participants were usually sleeping at that hour, as many by trade were working in nightclubs until the wee hours of the morning. Indeed, some of the musicians who were invited failed to explain up, either unable to commit themselves to awakening at such unaccustomed hours or misunderstanding the depth of the project completely.
There are astounding interviews with some of the fresh musicians, notably Art Blakey and Dizzie Gillespie, but a number of other musicians are heard from as well, including trumpeter Buck Clayton, singer Marian McPartland and the vast saxophone player, Gerry Mulligan. The participants in the photo are a veritable who’s who of Jazz; some of the musicians include Red Allen, Buster Bailey, Count Basie, Lester Young, Maxine Sullivan, Stuff Smith, Pee Wee Russell, Jimmy Rushing, Sonny Rollins, Theolonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Gene Krupa, Max Kaminsky, Jo Jones, Milt Hinton, Art Farmer, Vic Dickenson, Lawrence Brown, Coleman Hawkins, J. C. Heard and Oscar Pettiford. The surviving musicians interviewed for the film offer exciting comments on their peers.

The film notes sadly that many of the musicians in the photo are no longer with us. In fact, a original photo was created for the occasion using the survivors from the novel shoot, and the number of musicians who have since passed away is gross. The “modern” photo is one of the most touching aspects of the special features; the survivors are each posed in the same station that they occupied in the modern photo, and the number of “blank” spaces (compared with the novel photo) is somber, touching and somewhat eerie.
The DVD has a number of other extraordinary extras. One menu presents a copy of the unusual photo; you can navigate to any image in the photo to contemplate any musicians name, and clicking on the name will bring up a collage of all points in the documentary (including outtakes) where that musician is discussed by his or her peers.
To have a represent of the epic of this historical photograph is truly a blessing. It was a huge day for my DVD collection when I acquired this fabulous film.
This DVD status is a handsome production in every intention. This is not strictly a “music” DVD; it’s a historical work about the people and their lives and experiences. There’s some Monk performance footage that’s incredible. And interviews with Blakey, Rollins, Hinton, Mulligan, et al are pure jazz history.
The first disk shows Jean Bach’s generous film; the second contains bios, archival pix and film clips of everybody in the relate. The second disk is quite a bonus–it’s over 3 hours long and is very informative!

How can it possibly be thirty years already since Ecstatic Days first premiered? This first season aired in the first half of 1974, and The Fonz was a smaller character (he’s not even in the opening credits in season 1) . However, these early single-camera episodes bring out the best of the series IMO.
If you compare these episodes to a season 4 episode for example, you can glance vastly different tones for the series (it went live in season 3) . The earlier episodes are a lot more authentic 50’s, while it became more and more a product of the 70’s and 80’s in the latter years.
When the prove went live, we didn’t seek as worthy outside action, as many of the funniest moments of the first season steal state outside of Arnold’s.
I hope Paramount announces season two soon, I cherish the early (first 4) seasons of this prove and will gladly add them to my library as soon as they reach out.
$39.99 might seem insane for a display without extras, but these are the uncut (over 25 mins on average) episodes as they haven’t been seen since 1974, and as icing on the cake, it is very chilly to eye the old-school red Paramount tags that have long been replaced at the ruin. The only downfall is that some scenes have really dirty prints, but I am willing to overlook it. Contented Days does not watch this spacious on tv.

I am so impressed with how this 43 year conventional classic Sci-Fi film looks and sounds on the DVD, that I am going to commence with that this time. Directed brillantly by George Pal(”7 Faces of Dr. Lao”/”Atlantis the Lost Continent”), the film also boasts the ample talents of Alan Young, Sebastian Cabot, and the elegant Yvette Mimieux, as “Weena”, who adds a slight romantic interest to the fable. It’s all theoretical as the design has yet to be tested, and George is met with skepticism by all except for one, his friend Filby (Young) . Anyway, after the guests leave, George decides it’s time to save his machine to the test, and what do you know? It Works! One should know the impetus for George’s desire to proceed forward in time is based on his dissatisfaction with the unusual station of human development, specifically out penchant for fighting with each other, and he desires to peep a world without conflict, among other things. As he goes forward he stops a few times but that which he wishes to avoid continually presents itself, eventually driving him into the year 800,000 where the world has become an Eden-like paradise populated by people called the Eloi. I found this film to be substantial fun, and one of the best science fictions films I’ve seen in a long time. As far as its faithfulness to the source material, I couldn’t really yelp you, but I did acquire the feel that there was a lot of respect fervent towards Wells’ vision, especially given the film focused a grand deal on the factual aspects and implications of who we are and how they may affect future generations. This, along with superb special effects (which earned the film an Academy Award for 1960) really helped sell the film overall. Some of the effects may seem quaint by today’s standards, but abet in the day this had to have been cutting edge stuff. The passage of time indicated by all the meticulous halt motion work, among other things, looks unbelievable. I also really liked the whole `Victorian’ feel of the time machine itself, a sense that it was truly created within the time period specified. I conception Taylor did very well presenting a man driven by his desire to gain the best in humanity, only to glance the more things change, the more they tend to discontinue the same. It felt like there was genuine growth from within the character, growth that stemmed from experiencing so great in so exiguous time. I especially liked the character of Alan Young as Filby as to me he represented sort of the general populous of society, those who live their lives day to day, living within their world, issue to earn things better through little steps than colossal strides. When I was in high school, we had a tradition where we’d go out and rent unpleasant movies. Gradually, this changed to renting peculiar movies and eventually segued into renting Expansive movies. One of our accepted actors was Malcolm McDowell, the smirking imp we’d seen in “A Clockwork Orange” and later in “O Lucky Man!”, another collaboration with the huge British director Lindsay Anderson (”This Sporting Life”, “In Celebration”, “Britannia Hospital”, and, incredibly, “The Whales of August”!) I grew particularly fond of his blend of sarcasm and vulnerability (vainly believing I possessed same; I may have been honest) and as a result became quite desperate to scrutinize this rare movie, which was actually supposed to be BETTER than “O Lucky Man!” I didn’t bag to do so until a few weeks ago, fully nine years since I graduated high school. I was not disappointed.
As it stands, “If…” isn’t only a large Malcolm McDowell film, it’s also a broad movie about the 60s in both Western society and more specifically Britain in its post-imperial hangover (one of the last British imperial dramas before the Falklands, the conflict in and evacuation of Aden–present-day Yemen–reached completion in 1967, probably while “If…” was filming) . The title itself apparently comes from the eminent Kipling poem which embodied the highest ideals of imperial Britain. College House, the school attended by Mick Travis–McDowell–and his two friends, is dominated by prefects, or “whips,” seniors who control the student body in the name of the weak-willed headmasters and teachers, who portray the 60s radical plan of liberal democracy. The coercive actions–cold showers, beatings–administered by the whips to Travis and his fellow rebels prefigure the punishment that would be delivered by the Chicago police, Parisian CRS, and Red Army to student demonstrators and the Czech people in May and August 1968 (in both capitalist and communist regimes the punishments are justified in the name of “society” or “the people”) .
Travis and his friends, the sarcastic Knightley (David Wood) and the pensive Wallace (Richard Warwick), negotiate their travails with wit and cunning and grasp up allies along the design, a waitress from a local coffeeshop (Christine Noonan) and younger student Bobby Phillips (Rupert Webster) . These two apparently become lovers of Travis and Wallace, respectively. Interestingly, while Anderson follows the pattern of other 60s “rebel” movies by marginalizing women, the relationship between Wallace and Phillips is sensitively and touchingly handled. This was a rare thing for the macho boys of the Novel Left, whose radicalism stopped at the closet door and who generally seemed to seek homosexuality as an aberration of the ruling classes. The film eventually ends with a surreal, bloody battle on school grounds that, while it will probably acquire post-Columbine viewers understandably squirm, seems, in the movie’s proper universe, the only possibly kill to the institutionalized oppression Travis and his pals face.

Unprejudiced as in “O Lucky Man!” there are hilariously surreal touches to the movie, lessening the shock of its waste and underscoring the absurdity of life at College House. I’ve been an anglophile most of my life (beginning at a rather tender age with “Swallows & Amazons”), so i had some concept of what English Public (private) School life was likely to be like, and may have understood what was happening here more fast than some of my firends who saw it with me.
In the context of what starts out as a fine starightforward-appearing school film, Anderson & MacDowell give us a rather Marxist allegory of fresh class struggle, steadily but almost imperceptibly entertaining from realism to a surreal parable of revolution.
The final sequences, with the limited mature lady with the submachine gun blazing away screaming “Bastards! Bastards!”, the school prefects organising the “suitable” (loyalist) students to fight the Revolution and pitched battle raging, have stayed with me ever since, even when i wouldn’t gawk the film for years at a time.
MacDowell (in his first accurate feature role) gives an amazing performance that both foreshadows and (in my notion) *over*shadows his next role, as Alex in “A Clockwork Orange”. “Clockwork” was hailed, glowing considerable rightly, as a opinion of a disintegrating society tearing itself to pieces — “..if..” covers mighty the same ground, and does it better and more memorably in tiny than Kubrick’s large canvas and vast brush strokes.
