Nine QUns joins a line of sly thrillers about master-pupil con artists and games within games within games that includes The Sting, House of Games, and Heist. In the first five minutes, we watch an overt scam–a young Argentinian named Juan (Gaston Pauls) running the two-10s-for-a-5 hornswoggle on a convenience store clerk–then find that we have been tricked along with the bystanders as another brand of deception kicks in. And so it goes as Juan, with both trepidation and excitement, drifts into partnership for a day with an older, more cosmopolitan conman, Marcos (Ricardo Darin). Knocking around Bunos Aires–from gritty downtown to cozy neighborhood side streets to a swank hotel where wealth murmurs behind every door–these damnably resourceful scoundrels try not to miss a bet, including an epic swindle involving the titular “Nine QUns,” a set of ultrarare stamps. Writer-director Fabian Bielinsky keeps a taut rein on everything, including his own cleverness. The end result is an entertainment as bracingly disciplined as it is ingenious. –Richard T. Jameson

In what may be the angriest portrait of Cuba ever made, director Leon Ichaso (Crossover Dreams) charts the journey of one young man from patriot to disillusioned dropout to angry rebel. Gustavo (Rene Lavan) is an idealistic young Marxist scholar who dreams of attending the University of Pragu. When he falls for an earthy dancer with a more pragmatic view of her homeland, who plans to escape to Florida, his ideals are systematically chipped away in the face of poverty, repression, corruption, and police brutality until it all becomes too much for him to bear. A far cry from the more romantic work of Tomas Gutiérrez Alea (Strawberry and Chocolate), this film speaks volumes about a generation of exiles burning with anger and hate for Castro and his regime. It’s also manipulative and heavy-handed, with Gustavo less a hero than a straw figure poised for a fall, and it’s far less revealing than such self-critical Cuban features as Portrait of Teresa and Memories of Underdevelopment. But its vivid and passionate feelings of betrayal can hardly be dismissed. Ichaso shot portions of the film in Cuba and smuggled the footage out, but Santo Domingo doubles for Havana through the bulk of the feature. –Sean Axmaker

Although these three OAVs (original animation videos) were released years apart–and years after the original Project A-Ko feature–they all share a single plot: the battle between A-Ko, who possesses super-powers, and the super-rich, mecha-building B-Ko for the affections of the infantile C-Ko. (The names of the characters play off the Japanese equivalent of “Girl A, Girl B” to designate extras in a script.) In “Cinderella Rhapsody,” A-Ko falls for the dashing motorcyclist Kei. B-Ko wants whatever A-Ko wants, and they’re soon fighting over Kei and C-Ko. But Kei only has eyes for C-Ko. In “Final,” C-Ko turns out to be a long-lost alien princess whose people come to reclaim her, but the story remains underdeveloped. C-Ko leaves with the alien fleet but turns up at A-Ko’s door the next morning and announces, “I came back.” Viewers may wonder why everyone is so gaga about a whiny case of arrested development like C-Ko, whether she’s a princess or not. In Japan, the pursuit of C-Ko is seen as a manifestation of the intense, platonic friendships among high school students, rather than lesbian attraction, but a weird sexuality pervades the stories, which include androgynous bodybuilders in dresses. All three episodes are silly enough to make Tenchi Muyo! sound like Nietzsche. Rated 13 and up for brief nudity, occasional sexual humor, and violence. –Charles Solomon

Godard’s Weekend lays down the trump in a harrowing and darkly funny allegory in which social mores fray along political lines. Played out in a metafilm in which characters qustion their own reality, a morally bankrupt Parisian couple tries to leave the city on a much-loathed country holiday with the wife’s parents. Along the way, endless traffic jams, sudden violence, and vistas of gory car crashes underscore their corrupted valus. Their lethal encounter with the in-laws and kidnap by an anarchic band of radical cannibals finds the couple–and presumably “decent” society with them–reverting to a nasty primitivism. The idea is of course that the bored, apathetic heart of the bourgeoisie is never far from acting out its most homicidal fantasies. –Alan E. Rapp
