Writer-director Tod Williams’s pleasantly flawed film, like his title character, drifts amiably along, full of untapped possibilities. Adrian Grenier has a slouchy charisma as Sebastian, a teenager in upstate New York who is tired of school and realizes that the world only expects him to “get a haircut, pay taxes, [and] die.” When his compassionate stepfather Hank (a serenely collected Clark Gregg) decides to live his life as a woman named Henrietta, it’s only one more thing to challenge Sebastian’s slowly developing worldview (”You care about too many people,” his father tells him). Williams can’t nudge his quirky musings into something larger, and the sex-change business becomes too much a dramatic contrivance, but the film moves with an affectingly low-key assurance. Better, Williams inspires his lead to convey without sentiment something rare in teen stories: unassuming, real affection for other human beings. –Steve Wiecking

Bob Gossage (comedian-actor Alan Davies) is a thoroughly gay, Manchester schoolteacher who falls for Rose (Lesley Sharp), a vibrant secretary stuck with a boyfriend she doesn’t love and a nalve mother bent on marrying a creepy con artist. Bob and Rose’s bumpy, inexplicable affair has its share of doubts, and there are many rules to be re-written (Rose stands by her man whenever he insists that he’s gay, not bi-sexual).
Yet these two know, instinctively, they are meant to grow up and out of their respective singles scenes (straights on one end of a club-dominated street, gays on the other end), no matter how painful their course or how often friends attempt to sabotage them. Davies and Sharp fully inhabit the rich characters created by writer Russell T. Davies, creator of the original, British version of QUr as Folk. This is a rewarding, lovely series, highly recommended. –Tom Keogh

Wells’s speculative meditation on the price of progress, this 1936 English science-fiction epic shows the painterly touch of director William Cameron Menzies, an American whose career in art direction and production design, as well as uncredited directorial work, attached him to such visual triumphs as Gone with the Wind, Alexander Korda’s sumptuous 1940 Thief of Baghdad, and Menzies’s better-known SF achievement as director, the original Invaders from Mars. Things to Come traces a generational saga that begins, presciently, with a global war that outlives its own political purpose, unraveling society to a Balkanized world of isolated communities. In the wake of a subsequnt, devastating plagu, a new technocracy arises, evolving toward Menzies’s striking vision of vast, subterranean cities, rendered in matte paintings building on then-contemporaneous art-deco “streamlined” aesthetics.
